Bornbefore84 is about living well as we age. It covers topics like health and fitness, staying current with technology trends and professional adaptation, and lifelong learning opportunities.
If you were born before 1984, you’re at least 40 and while my goal in writing is staying relevant and enjoying life in my 40’s, 50’s, and beyond, I start with the 40 year milestone which has always been significant to me.
In 1999, just as I was finishing college I read a Fortune magazine story titled “Finished at Forty”. The thesis was that a career, at least a corporate one which I was tracking towards, was largely over at age of 40. It was a shocking forecast for me that I might have less than 20 years of professional relevance. This stayed seared in my mind as I turned 25, then 30, then 35, and ultimately 40. Like everyone, it happened so much faster than I anticipated.
While I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn’t finished at 40, both in my professional and personal life, I did observe a mindset in many peers and myself that was generally resigned to an expected decline in life.
Things that have enriched my life in this older phase of it I will write on:
Tracking and optimizing blood work
Hormone therapy and supplementation
Frequent, daily fitness
Stimulation by learning and getting out of my comfort zone
Rather than being finished at 40, I’ve been invigorated that in many ways I was just getting started.
